The Monday before we learned of Sinead O’Conner’s death my daughter and I went to an open mic night in our neighborhood. Between the nostalgic folk songs that are typical for the evening, a teenage girl walked up to the microphone, dressed in black with an acoustic guitar she wailed into the microphone. It was an outpouring of pain, rage and pleading. And yet it was melodic and beautiful. The room was stunned into silence. When she finished she bowed her head and walked into the night. A few days later when we heard of Sinead O’Conner’s passing my daughter said, “Maybe that was her ghost”. Maybe.
